How to Keep your Westie Calm During Storms

A PDSA Vet Nurse provides top tips

The UK continues to battle with storms and overall bad weather and vet charity PDSA is offering advice for pet owners on how to keep our four-legged friends safe and calm.

PDSA Vet Nurse Nina Downing said: “Storms can be pretty scary for our pets – loud noises, strong winds and unexpected flashes can be frightening. Even though the weather can be unpredictable, there are things us owners can prepare to help keep our dogs safe through any stormy weather.”

Here are Nina’s top tips on storm safety for dogs:

Keep an eye on the forecast and plan walks around the worst of the weather, sticking to drier and calmer periods. Shorter walks may be necessary, or if there are extreme weather warnings it may be best to skip the walk that day and remain indoors. Instead, play some indoor games to keep them physically and mentally active.

If you are out and about during dark and stormy weather, your pet should wear reflective or LED gear, such as coats, collars or leads. Check out PDSA’s online shop ( for their range of accessories – purchases help to support the charity’s work treating sick and injured pets in need.

Make sure your dog always wears a collar and an ID tag, and that their microchip details are up to date. In case they run away or escape, this will mean you’re more likely to get quickly reunited.

Before a storm starts, close all windows, doors, and curtains. You can play some music or have the TV on, to help muffle any loud sounds.

Set up a doggy den – a cosy space filled with blankets or pillows somewhere they feel safe. If your dog prefers to hide away, let them do so, but stay close by and don’t leave them unsupervised. Give them plenty of reassurance if they want it, so they know there’s no real danger.

Puzzle toys are great for keeping your four-legged friends distracted during bad weather. Just be mindful of any additional calories – take any treats from their daily food allowance if possible.
